Bellamar caves and Saturno caves

Le petit mot de la guide

The Bellamar caves are one of Cuba's natural treasures. They were discovered in 1861 by a worker for landowner Manuel Santos Parga. The Cuevas de Bellamar (Bellamar caves), located 5 km from Matanzas, are a series of caves more than 23 km long and 300,000 years old, making them Cuba's oldest tourist centre and a national monument. As well as the astonishing stalactites, stalagmites and helictites they contain, the Bellamar caves are home to an incredible natural phenomenon found only here. The solid calcite crystals hanging from the stalactites have attracted the attention of geologists from all over the world. The entrance to the caves is via a small museum. On entering the cave, you first descend several steps, and then the rest of the visit is on a relatively flat, well-lit path through the galleries and chambers. The Cuevas de Saturno (Saturno Caves), located on the Matanzas-Varadero road, are one of Cuba's most popular natural monuments.
