Havana, two hours from Varadero, is Cuba's capital and largest city. Havana is the country's main port and commercial centre. It is the most populous city, the largest in terms of surface area and the second largest metropolitan area in the Caribbean region. In 2012, the population was 2,154,454. Havana was founded by the Spanish in 1519. Contemporary Havana can be described as three cities in one: Old Havana, Vedado and the new suburbs. Old Havana was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982. The city is also known for its history, culture, architecture and monuments.
